Britain’s Favourite singer, Alfie Boe, and the celebrated American soprano Renée Fleming performed ‘Somewhere’ from Bernstein’s West Side Story on the Royal Balcony as part of the BBC’S Diamond Jubilee Concert in London this evening. This iconic moment from the show is the first time that a non Royal has been allowed onto this balcony and Gary Barlow and the BBC had to seek special permission from The Palace for this to take place. Two of the greatest stars of the opera world, their rendition had the crowd mesmerised and of course the balcony is so relevant for this moment because of West Side Story being based on Romeo and Juliet.
Alfie commented “This was an incredible moment for me, performing for Her Majesty and the Royal Family, standing on their balcony at Buckingham Palace. Tonight was so exciting and I hope everyone enjoyed it, the crowds here at The Palace and on television across the UK and around The World. I can’t quite believe that I performed here on the stage in front of The Palace and then on the World-Famous balcony, with some of the greatest performers of our time”.
